Anton Chekhov  (Playwright) is widely recognized as one of the greatest Russian storytellers of all time. A playwright, short-story writer, and physician, his work yields exquisitely drawn sketches of turn of the century Russian life. His themes, while often profoundly tragic, are carefully imbued with light and subtle satire. His plays include Uncle Vanya (1900), Three Sisters (1901), and The Cherry Orchard (1903). Chekhov, who practiced medicine throughout his literary career, perhaps put it best, “Medicine is my lawful wife, and literature is my mistress.”

Current Production
The Locus Theatre Company is pleased to present Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull on March 10 – 21, 2010, at the Gene Frankel Theatre ( www.genefrankel.com) in NYC’s East Village.

A brilliant tragicomedy of human folly and frustration, The Seagull (1896) is a slice of life drama set in the Russian countryside at the turn of the century. In this masterwork, which provoked an enormous stir and heralded his triumph as a playwright, Chekhov weaves his unwitting characters into a comedic and tangled web of love, jealousy, vanity and betrayal. His fascinating mosaic of conversations, confessions and recriminations reveals as much about modern audiences today as it did at its sensational opening.

Upcoming Events
On Sat, January 30th 2010 we look forward to welcoming friends, family and supporters as they join us in honoring Anton Chekhov. Timed with Chekhov’s 150th birthday, the celebration will act as a fundraising event to aid Locus in reaching our production goals. The party will be hosted by Locus supporter The Panda (www.thepandanyc.com) and will feature live performances by Locus company members and other artists, door prizes, as well as hors d’oeuvres. If you would like to become a sponsor of the silent auction, please contact us at locustheatrecompany@gmail.com or (212) 340-1033.
